My best definition of Hip-Hop is the art expressing manhood, individuality, female empowerment, the strive to success out of struggle (American dream), loyalty and family. Hip-hop was created in 1973 beginning with four legs. The four legs of Hip-Hop are graffiti, the DJ's, the MC's, and the break dancers (B-boys/girls). On August 11, 1973 an 18 year old Clive Campbell planted the roots of Hip-Hop. He moved to the Bronx, New York from Kingston, Jamaica at the age of 11. Already interested in music from the dancehalls near his birth home and soon later a graffiti squad (whom created the nickname Kool Herc) when he moved to New York he was destined to create. Seven years later he was the DJ and MC at a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the West Bronx. At that party he played songs by James Brown, other American soul and funk artists, and most importantly Jamaican dancehall tunes. While playing the Jamaican dancehall songs he would use his turntable to break and extend the beat portion of the song allowing listeners to continue dancing. During the breaks of the songs he spoke over the microphone a few words at a time insisting the audience kept grooving and enjoying themselves. That was the first recorded event within Hip-Hop.
ALWAYS THANKS HERC.
